    More than 16 million people around the world suffer from drug-resistant epilepsy, a condition that can severely impact patients’ overall health. In such cases, appropriate treatment crucially depends on the analysis of brain electrical activity to localize the brain regions where seizures originate. Scalp electroencephalography (EEG) is often inaccurate, and most patients requiring resective surgery need to undergo intracranial monitoring, a highly invasive procedure with clinical risks and large diagnostic costs.

    To develop BrainFocus for non-invasive EEG, a computerized tool to analyse scalp EEG recordings and provide accurate localization of the seizure focus in epileptic patients. The BrainFocus team has recently developed a data-driven algorithm to localize the origin of epileptic seizures without making assumptions on the expected electrical patterns in the brain.

    In contrast with existing solutions, this technology achieves a great level of adaptation by learning the underlying signal pattern from the activity itself. Moreover, it largely improves visual inspection by providing an objective quantification that is independent of personal biases.

    BrainFocus has been validated with intracranial electrodes and the team now aims to demonstrate its efficacy in the non-invasive setting to assist neurologists in epilepsy diagnosis.
