AI platform for liver transplant assessment

Excess of fat in the liver is one of the major reasons to discard livers for transplantation, since it increases the risk of postoperative complications.
Currently, the decision to use or discard the organ is based on the surgeon's assessment from visual analysis, a highly error prone procedure that greatly depends on the doctor’s experience. As a result, it is estimated that around 30% of the livers discarded for donation in Spain could have been used for transplantation if an objective accurate assessment had been carried out.
This project, with the collaboration of Dr. Concepción Gómez-Gavara and Itxarone Bilbao of the Vall de Hebrón Research Institute (VHIR), aims to implement a valorisation plan and define the best commercialisation strategy for LiverColor, an innovative diagnostic tool that uses artificial intelligence to support the medical decision process for liver selection from a simple picture. Additionally, it will be further developed to provide in vivo assessment of the liver by endoscopy, allowing doctors to much more easily identify and monitor patients with steatosis and/or fibrosis.
