We remain committed to research into HIV and AIDS to help advance knowledge, prevention and treatments for this illness through AIDS Research Institute, IrsiCaixa, and the AIDS vaccine research and development programme, HIVACAT.

In 1995, in collaboration with the Department of Health of the Catalan government, ”la Caixa” Foundation set up the AIDS Research Institute, IrsiCaixa, with the aim of furthering our knowledge of HIV (by studying its structure, variability, mechanisms of infection and multiplication and drug response), preventing AIDS and studying its treatments, with the ultimate goal of eradicating the epidemic.

Located at Hospital Germans Trias i Pujol in Barcelona, IrsiCaixa is a global benchmark in AIDS research, made up of internationally renowned researchers.

The HIVACAT programme is implemented through a public-private consortium without precedent in Spain, placing the country internationally at the forefront of research carried out in this field. The consortium is made up of IrsiCaixa, Hospital Clínic de Barcelona, Laboratorios Esteve, the Catalan government and ”la Caixa” Foundation.

Since 2007, the HIVACAT programme has worked to develop and obtain HIV vaccines, both preventative to avoid HIV infection and also therapeutic to arrest the development of the disease.
